Don’t panic though, help is on the way. Telefónica has developed Smart Notifications, a new AI/Machine Learning technology, to address this challenge. Smart Notifications enables brands to contact users only when they are ‘open to engagement’, and just as importantly, it knows when users are busy and so not to contact them. This is done by analysing real-time data gathered from phone sensors, as well as historical and contextual information in order to find the moments of engagement that other services cannot detect, such as battery usage, whether WiFi is on or off, screen brightness level, app usage, and an accelerometer. For example, a user is seated indoors, not moving, but not sleeping, and their app usage is sporadic and not rushed - therefore we can deduce that the user is bored and is open to a push notification. Telefónica’s case studies reveal that users are 30-40% more likely to interact with apps and 40% less likely to disable notifications, as a result of Smart Notifications.
