Swrve: HIPAA and COPPA Compliant

Cyber security and protecting personal data is of critical importance in every industry. The last thing anyone wants is their customer’s sensitive personal data falling into the wrong hands. That’s why the experts at Swrve have taken the proper measures to ensure that the 14 billion data points that stream through our platform daily remain protected, no matter what. Here’s a look at how our platform adapts to fit the standards of two top data regulations, HIPAA and COPPA:

HIPAA

The US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) has been put in place to provide data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. It requires covered entities with access to such sensitive personal data to instate adequate protections against breaches or misuse.

The shift from desktop to mobile has made it challenging for healthcare service providers to offer the same exceptional service they deliver on the desktop for today’s mobile-centric patients while simultaneously complying with HIPAA privacy regulations. A key concern is: will it be possible to extend their online services to the highly dynamic, fast-paced mobile environment AND adhere to regulations?

With Swrve, understanding these scenarios have helped us build a mobile marketing engagement platform that can operate without collecting personal information. As our customer, you are in control of what end user data is sent to us, and all of our features are fully available while you keep your end user data entirely safe and secure. This is made possible by the random generating a unique, anonymous Swrve ID for each instance of an app on a device.

Healthcare service providers can avoid sharing PHI (Protected Health Information) through Swrve while still delivering highly relevant, meaningful, and contextual information to their patients. The Swrve platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has extensive support for HIPPA workloads, keeping private information secure for a growing number of healthcare providers, payers, and IT professionals. As a result, Swrve customers can extend the same exceptional service they’ve optimized on desktop to mobile-centric patients, delivering a 1:1 patient journey that is relevant to real-time needs across channels.

COPPA

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) gives parents control over what information websites can collect from their children. It ensures that businesses’ privacy policies are transparent to parents, and parental consent is received before collecting personal information from children under age 13.

With children under 13 having access to an abundance of apps, websites, and other digital experiences daily, it’s critical for businesses to have smart targeting and triggering measures in place to protect against violating COPPA regulations. Because the wrong message sent to the wrong customer can quickly result in a fine, or worse—a lawsuit.

Swrve’s enterprise-grade targeting and real-time triggering capabilities give brands the ability to segment campaigns based on any combination of customer profiles and interactions. So if a user’s made it known that they are under 13 years of age anywhere a Swrve SDK is installed (mobile, desktop, etc.), it will be recognized in our platform immediately, and teams can redirect those campaigns to other user profiles.

Our platform also sports a real-time opt-out capability that, once triggered, will be honored immediately, in real time. So if a parent chooses to opt their children out of certain communications, Swrve will instantly filter them out of those campaigns. In addition, Swrve was built to work seamlessly with any age gates that teams put in place to further protect against underage customers from receiving the wrong messaging.

A great example of Swrve’s COPPA compliance in action can be found in our work with Hopster, an early learning app for children that spans across 35 markets. To keep promotional messaging away from children, Hopster used Swrve to create an inbox in the app for all subscription-related messaging. This fully scalable, COPPA-compliant inbox gave 30% of all of Hopster’s in-app messages a dedicated space for parental review, allowing Hopster to easily and freely speak directly to parents and guardians about subscriptions and current promotions.
